A significant government initiative aimed at making prescription eyeglasses more accessible and affordable in the Maldives has already catered to over 23,800 citizens.
Historically, the cost of prescription spectacles in the Maldives has been a considerable financial burden for many families. Responding to widespread public hope for easier access and reduced costs, the current administration has prioritised addressing this critical need.
Central to this effort are the "MCGH Opticals" outlets established within government hospitals. According to the Male' City Group of Hospitals (MCGH), these outlets have collectively produced and largely handed over a remarkable total of 23,847 pairs of glasses to date.
Eyewear shops under MCGH Opticals are currently operational in four key government hospitals including Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumale' Hospital, Addu Equatorial Hospital, and Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.
Detailed statistics shared by MCGH highlight the impact across these facilities:
IGMH has handed over 12,507 glasses from a total of 13,595 orders received.
Hulhumale' Hospital completed 8,247 glasses out of 8,934 orders.
Addu Equatorial Hospital delivered 1,746 pairs from 2,096 orders received.
Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital provided 1,347 glasses out of 1,650 total orders.
This vital service falls under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's commitment to making essential healthcare, including affordable eyeglasses, accessible through the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha.
From 15 January, Aasandha has announced that 18 private establishments registered to provide Aasandha services will also begin offering eyeglasses under government-set regulations. This expansion includes prominent names such as ADK Hospital, Eyecare branches, Advance Eye Clinic, City Optical, Vision Clinic, and Senahiya Hospital, significantly broadening the network of providers across the nation.
Further enhancing affordability, the subsidy for glasses under Aasandha was increased from USD 64.85 to USD 129.70 per person every two years, effective June last year, providing even greater financial relief to citizens.
