New reports disclose that the Maldivian government has been billed by a foreign legal consultancy firm for 10 million US Dollars in return for legal advice given to the Nasheed Administration a couple of years ago.
More than 154 million in local currency is to be paid to Grant Thornton which was hired by Nasheed Administration to investigate alleged corruption during the presidency of Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom.
According to some sources, a bill for rendered service was sent to the government by Grant Thornton last week.
Attorney General Aishath Azima Shukoor gave details about the issue, saying that Nasheed Administration hired Grant Thornton in 2010 and 2011 for two different assignments. She said that one of these two assignments cost £4.6 million, while the other was billed $358,000.
Azima also said that while the bills were submitted to the government, reports on the findings of the firm have not yet been submitted.
Some sources confirm that the records of the transaction between Nasheed Administration and Grant Thornton are also partly missing. Nasheed Administration had claimed that reports of the work done by Grant Thornton had been received.
