Former Deputy Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Alhaan Fahmy said that he had begged the former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed not to resign.
Speaking during the SunTV show “50 Minute” last Sunday night, Alhaan said that Nasheed had a very stubborn personality, and refused to budge once he made a decision.
“President Nasheed refuses to budge once he’s made a decision. What we faced, we faced because of that. We stood by him until the last minute. When he resigned, I begged him not to step down as president – that he didn’t need to resign just yet,” said Alhaan.
He also claimed to have no knowledge Nasheed had been planning to arrest the former Chief Judge of Criminal Court, Judge Abdulla Mohamed. And said that he was only made aware when Nasheed called him to inform him, after the fact.
Alhaan said that he had immediately asked Nasheed to release the judge. But that Nasheed had given no heed to any of his advice.
The former lawmaker said that he had also advised Nasheed not to contend in the
Presidential Elections 2013 and allow another MDP candidate to contend instead “for the sake of the future of MDP”.
Alhaan said that he had immediately lost favor with Nasheed after he made the suggestion, and was labeled as someone who did not favor Nasheed as a president.
“It was a short time after that, that there were protests and a no-confidence movement took place against me. With the no-confidence movement, I again set out to reform MDP and advocate for a ‘new’ MDP,” said Alhaan.
