Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, Maldives – 25th July 2016– The President of the Republic of Maldives his Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom commenced the reclamation works for the development of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) at a special ceremony at the eastern side of runway lagoon area on 25th July 2016.
The ceremony was attended by ministers, the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Mr. Wang Fukang, Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) board directors and senior staff of MACL along with Project team from Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG).
The Managing Director of MACL Mr. Adil Moosa in his introductory speech said that this project will greatly benefit for the development of INIA. Economic Development Minister Mr. Mohamed Saeed speaking to reporters said this reclamation project will be different as it is intended to build a stronger runway to cater for the A380 type of aircraft.
As part of BUCG project, total land area to be reclaimed is 620,000 square meters with volume of sand at 4.2 million cubic meters along with 4 kilometer of shore protection. The reclamation work is divided into 5 phases which will accommodate to the expansion projects of developing a new Runway of 3400 x 60 meters, a new Cargo Complex which would cater for 120,000 tons of air-cargo per year and a brand new Fuel Farm with a storage capacity 45 million liters of Jet A1 fuel along with fuel hydrant system.
