Nekton mission is looking for a Maldivian to join Maldives Deep Sea Research expedition for knowledge exchange.
The application deadline is 22nd August, and offers the unique opportunity to work with the Maldives Marine Research Institute and Nekton Mission in the first exploration of life below 300m in the Maldivian ocean.
Nekton’s deep sea research in the Maldives will be conducted in September and October this year. The expedition aims to investigate life across depths 0-1000m between North Male’ atoll and Addu Atoll. The research will look into pelagic communities, fish diversity, and zooplankton as well as to capture environmental perimeters that drive changes to the ecosystems.
“Deep sea harbours unique ecosystem that support our ecosystems directly and indirectly. From climate regulation, biochemical cycling or provision of resources – non-living resources or genetic resources – and the deep sea is also a historical archive.” Professor Lucy Wooddall from the Nekton Mission said during her presentation of the expedition at the Maldives Marine Science Symposium this weekend.
Multiple deployments of many different equipment is also required for the expedition, due to the nature of it.
The expedition is from 7th to 17th September on MV Dhinasa Livaboard.
Earlier this month, Nekton Mission employed its first Maldivian research assistant to work alongside them on the mission.
