Road development commenced for three islands in Shaviyani Atoll

Road Development Corporation (RDC) has commenced road upgrades for three islands in Shaviyani Atoll.
The government has placed a special priority on modernising roads in atolls, with this particular initiative focused on Kaditheemu, Maroshi and Goidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll.
Surveys are currently ongoing to carry out this Public Service Investment (PSI) programme, RDC has detailed. Road development for each island is set for completion within 730 days.
RDC has signed the agreement for the project in Kanditheemu on 13th October 2025, with seven roads slated for development on the island. This is a USD 4.94 million initiative. Meanwhile, the Maroshi road development initiative was signed by RDC on 7th August 2025. A total of USD 3.89 million is slated for this project to modernise eight roads. Also, the project in Goidhoo was assigned to RDC, and was signed by the corporation on 25th October 2025. Development will be carried out for ten roads for USD 4.70 million.
Roads will be upgraded with established pavements, streetlights and drainage systems in place. The government has assured that islands will not be required to pave roads, as part of modernisation plans.
Instead, sand roads will be maintained for islands with thriving local tourism industries, with a focus on solving drainage and flooding issues by acquiring the necessary vehicles and working with local councils to procure resources for road repair.
The government has ensured that problems will be solved according to demand by residents, and that they will provide the necessary resources to facilitate this.
