In a move addressing the primary concerns of local residents, the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib has assured that the ongoing Maafushi harbour development will proceed as requested by the island's community, specifically regarding the restructuring of its outer breakwater.
This assurance comes as the government tackles one of the biggest infrastructural challenges facing the Maldives' largest local tourism destination, where booming visitor numbers have strained the old harbour's capacity.
The current harbour, struggling to accommodate the increasing traffic of dinghies, diving boats, and speedboats essential for the island's economy, is now undergoing a major transformation.
The project, awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for around USD 5 million, involves the development of a modern 374-meter harbour that incorporates the existing structure with a significant new addition.
While the rapid pace of work is a welcome sight, residents have repeatedly voiced a significant concern—potential changes to the island's outer breakwater during construction.
Speaking directly to this issue, Minister Muththalib confirmed that the Ministry's bid committee has officially decided to complete the harbour project precisely as the people have requested, prioritising their needs and collaborating with the island council to ensure the project supports the island's sustainable development.
The initiative marks a key step in sustaining Maafushi's status as a top destination for tourists seeking an authentic Maldivian experience.
