President Muizzu concludes Bangladesh visit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has concluded his official visit to Bangladesh and returned to Malé this afternoon, following his participation in the swearing-in ceremony of the country’s new Prime Minister in Dhaka.
The President travelled to the Bangladeshi capital at the invitation of Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh, to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his new administration, held on 17 February at the National Parliament.
Bangladesh’s President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, administered the oath of office to Tarique Rahman and members of his cabinet in the presence of leaders and representatives from neighbouring and friendly countries.
On the sidelines of the ceremony, President Muizzu held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Rahman. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the long-standing ties between the Maldives and Bangladesh. President Muizzu congratulated Prime Minister Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on their victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections, held on 12 February. He said the Maldives looked forward to working closely with the new administration to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors. According to officials, discussions focused on expanding collaboration in trade and investment, healthcare, environmental protection, higher education and air connectivity.
Prime Minister Rahman thanked President Muizzu for attending the ceremony and conveyed his appreciation for the Maldives’ continued engagement.
This marks President Muizzu’s first visit to Bangladesh since assuming office on 17 November 2023.
