The People’s National Front (PNF) has accused state-owned utility STELCO of refusing to provide electricity for its upcoming ‘RESET’ rally, scheduled for Wednesday night at Male’s artificial beach.
PNF Secretary General Mohamed Maleeh Jamal claimed that STELCO removed cables from the rally site on Tuesday, describing it as a deliberate attempt to obstruct the event.
“This shows the government’s fear of the PNF,” Maleeh said, calling on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to refrain from such “low-level” actions.
He urged the Elections Commission to take legal action against STELCO, stating that the party is operating within the framework of the Political Parties Act.
“Electricity is a basic right. This is not a new thing STELCO is doing with the intention of not providing electricity to the event. President Yameen will have the courage to hold this rally without electricity,” Maleeh said.
The rally, themed “RESET”, is expected to feature former President Abdulla Yameen, who recently joined the PNF after leaving the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). The movement aims to challenge what it calls the government’s “unwanted actions.”
STELCO has not publicly responded to the allegations.
