The Maldives and Malaysia exchanged four agreements on Monday, agreeing to boost cooperation in fields such as tourism.
The exchange of agreements took place on Monday morning during Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Malaysia – his first official visit to Kuala Lumpur since he assumed office in 2023.

The agreements exchanged are:
Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism
Memorandum of Understanding on Sports
Memorandum of Understanding on Health
Exchange of Notes on Bilateral Consultations and Diplomatic Training

The signing of the agreements took place in the presence of President Muizzu and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Before the exchange of agreements, the two led official talks between the two countries, focused on enhancing development cooperation on a range of issues and fostering people-to-people connections.
According to PM Anwar, the discussions covered a broad range of topics including enhancing cooperation in trade, education, tourism, climate change, defense, youth and sports, Islamic banking, halal industry, anti-corruption, digital tech, solar energy, and artificial intelligence.

“We also addressed regional issues, including the situation in Myanmar, Gaza, and U.S. tariffs,” he said, in a post on X.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening Maldives-Malaysia relations.
“Insha-Allah, we are committed to ensuring these discussions are fully implemented at the ministry and agency levels,” added PM Anwar.
The signing of the agreements was followed by a business forum organized by the Maldivian Economic Ministry, during which he and the rest of the Maldivian delegation engaged with leading Malaysian investors.

He is also scheduled to visit the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) to lecture on “Intellectual Renaissance: Unveiling the Scientific and Modern Development of Islamic Civilization,” and meet with the Maldivian community residing in Malaysia.
President Muizzu, who was invited to visit Malaysia by PM Anwar, is set to wrap up his trip and return to the Maldives on Wednesday.
He is accompanied on the visit by a high-level delegation of cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
