Transport Ministry and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to undertake the necessary preparations to commence taxi service in the greater Male’ area.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Wednesday at a special ceremony at Meeruma Hotel. Director General Ahmed Shameem signed on behalf of the Transport Ministry, while Managing Director Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retired) Ahmed Saudee signed on behalf of MTCC.
According to MTCC, the taxi service in Male’ area is aimed at providing a safe and reliable source of transportation for both residents and tourists. The company said the government will be utilizing a taxi fleet comprising entirely of electrical vehicles in the provision of the service.
MTCC said the taxi service is also intended to provide a high-quality service that meets the public’s expectations, while addressing the growing demand for transportation in the Male’ area.

As per the company, the taxi service, which will be available 24 hours, will be provided via special application. Customers can identify which taxi is the nearest to their location via the application.
Transport Ministry states the government’s taxi service will also be provided at the same rates declared by the Ministry in its guidelines. Bookings can be made seven days earlier to attain the service, without any additional charge.
Notably, ruling PNC’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Falah had previously denied the government's plans to launch a taxi service, amid opposition from private taxi centers and drivers who are against the initiative.
