Parliamentary Committee on National Security Services has summoned the doctors who treated Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed following the May 6 terrorist attack.
The committee questioned the doctors from ADK Hospital at a closed-door meeting. Those who were summoned to the committee included Dr. Abdulla Niyaf, who was the head of the medical team that treated Nasheed, as well as Dr. Ahmed Nishan and Managing Director of ADK Hospital Mohamed Afaal.
Speaker Nasheed was severely injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated near his residence on May 6.
He underwent a 16-hour operation at ADK Hospital in Male' after the attack, and was taken to Germany on May 13 for further treatment. The ADK medical team that treated Nasheed stated he had sustained life-threatening injuries in the attack, which could have been fatal. The team of doctors stated Nasheed had to undergo hours of surgery to extract the shrapnel that was lodged inside his body, which had damaged his ribs and vital organs, and that one piece of shrapnel had been one centimetre away from his heart.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested five suspects in relation to the attack, including the individual who allegedly detonated the IED and the owner of the motorcycle to which the device was attached. The committee has summoned numerous senior state officials as well as police and military officers for its inquiry.
Chairperson Mohamed Aslam has said the committee has obtained enough information to conclude the inquiry and draft a report on the attack within a week.
