Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has acknowledged that despite the Maldives Police Service growing stronger and more capable each day, it has yet to overcome the negative image created during politically turbulent periods in the country’s past.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 39th Basic Police Training Course, PG Abbas highlighted that the image of the police force had been severely damaged during activities carried out years ago under the banner of democratic reform.
He noted that during those times, the respect and dignity afforded to the nation’s security forces, particularly the police, had diminished, with officers being publicly ridiculed and branded with derogatory labels.
“Regardless of who was responsible or their reasons, the damage done is still being paid for by multiple generations,” Abbas said.
He emphasized that although the police force has made significant progress in capacity and professionalism, the perception among the public remains a challenge. “Despite growing capabilities, the police have not yet overcome the tainted image created against the institution,” he added.
Abbas called for renewed efforts to build public trust, asserting that the damage is so deep that visible and consistent improvements in service delivery are necessary to restore confidence.
“The trust of the people must be taken to a new level. Only then can we achieve the desired outcomes in law enforcement and justice,” he said.
