President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast for three days from July 29, 2025, following the passing of Hassan Sobir, a recipient of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.) and a stalwart in the Maldives’ economic and diplomatic sectors. Sobir passed away earlier today at Tree Top Hospital at the age of 73.
The Government will hold a State Funeral for Sobir, with the funeral prayer scheduled at Masjid al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam after Asr prayer today.
Over his 38-year public service career, Sobir made remarkable contributions to national development, particularly advancing tourism, fisheries, and agriculture. His efforts in national planning and foreign service have left a lasting impact on the Maldives.
Sobir began his government career under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s leadership, joining the National Planning Agency in 1978 as a Statistical Survey Officer. He played a pivotal role in preparations for the 1985 Census, leading the country’s first implementation of computer technology for national data.
His ministerial roles included Deputy Minister and later Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, where he launched significant projects such as a 1,500-tonne cold storage in Gaafu Alif Kooddoo and the one million tree planting program. As Minister of Tourism, Sobir navigated the sector through global challenges and boosted international promotion under the motto “Sunny Side of Life.”
Sobir’s diplomatic career included appointments as High Commissioner to Singapore, Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, and Ambassador to Japan, where he strengthened international relations and secured aid and trade benefits for the Maldives.
He also served as a Member of Parliament representing North Ari Atoll from 2000 to 2005.
Sobir is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. The nation honours his legacy and profound contributions to the Maldives’ progress and international standing.
