During event held to celebrate Maldives Correction Service’s 51st anniversary, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the current inmates in rehabilitation are corrupted with drugs and religious extremism.
President said that a survey conducted by Transparency Maldives in response to a request from the Home Ministry established this. According to the president, drug traffickers has a significant effect over prisoners. He added that the convicts need to be cared for better than now, since religious radicals pressure the detainees to commit various crimes.
President Solih promised to address these problems. He said that a unit in Maafushi Jail is being built specifically for various training programs that are planned to be undertaken for inmates.
He also said that by allowing detainees to attend court hearings online, the procedure will be made simpler for them. 8 courtrooms in Male and Maafushi Jail are being used for this.
According to the President, the Maldives Correctional Service has the duty to rehabilitate offenders even though they are incarcerated in order to secure the protection of society before they are released.
Correction officers and employees were also assured by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the occasion that a solution to their housing issues would be found, despite the fact that none of these pledges had been kept during his government.
