JP's vote rigging case tabled for Sunday

The hearing has been scheduled for 1.20pm on Sunday. The court had accepted the case Wednesday a day after it had dismissed the case citing that it did not fit the circumstances stipulated in the elections law. The article on elections state that a case involving unlawful acts, or grievances over a decision made by the elections commission in relation to a complaint filed at the commission or complaints over the elections results can be filed at the High Court. Jumhoory Party had asked for an order to obtain the voters list and results sheet alleging that Saturday's vote had been rigged. Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) along with opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) are considering intervening in the case. JP's presidential candidate Gasim Ibrahim who narrowly missed out on a place in the runoff had alleged that 20,000 unlawful votes had been cast during the first round. The elections commission on Sunday formally announced the runoff between Mohamed Nasheed, who secured 45.45 percent of the vote and Yamin, who garnered 25.35 percent of votes to beat Gasim with a difference of less than 3,000 votes. JP had alleged that ballots had been cast in the names of deceased, people had been re-registered without their knowledge, vote had been rigged and different results had been reported by various media outlets from the same result sheet. The party had also alleged that the result does not tally with the voter turnout. However, elections commission has continuously denied the accusations by maintaining that any attempts to rig the vote would have been flagged during polling on Saturday.
