PPM’s case against EC to commence

The case against the Elections Commission (EC), over its decision to invalidate the party congress of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives, is set to commence on Monday at the High Court.
PPM submitted the case late last month, requesting the court to make EC recognize the party congress which was held in September.
EC declared the congress illegitimate, stating that it was held in violation of the party charter.
During the congress, outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdula Gayoom was declared PPM's new leader, while four vice presidents and council members were also appointed.
The case seeking to legitimize the congress proceedings was submitted late October.
Two PPM members have also submitted a case demanding that PPM leadership be handed over to former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The Supreme court has attained access to information regarding the case as well.
The civil court decided to hand over the leadership of PPM to the outgoing president in 2016 following a dispute between him and the former president. Gayoom was expelled from PPM following this decision.
