Nasheed asks Indian government to protect Indian businesses in Maldives

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has requested for Indian government’s assistance in protecting Indian businesses which have invested in the Maldives.
Nasheed said during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today that Indian companies had invested $873m in Maldives over the past three years while he was President, and that these companies now need protection.
During his first visit to India since he was ousted, Nasheed provided details of the events of February 6, 7 and 8. He told the Prime Minister that the government uses police and military to carry out inhuman practices.
Dr Singh noted during the meeting that the peace roadmap drawn up with the assistance of the Indian government should be followed, and also welcomed Nasheed’s attempt to encourage foreign investment in the Maldives. He said that India will always support the existence of a democratic government in the Maldives.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said that Nasheed also met with several businessmen from Mumbai. Nasheed is currently visiting India to gain India’s support for MDP.
