No confidence motion against President, Minister won't pass: Gasim
Speaking to reporters after returning from his month long visit to Germany today, Gasim stressed that though the constitution allowed for a no confidence vote against President Waheed and Home Minister Jameel, the vote would not be successful to oust them from their respective posts. Gasim further alleged that opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted the motion with the intention of selling their lies to the public. “No matter who is in the Parliament, I don’t believe that a no confidence vote can be taken against the President and Minister. I’m quite certain that the vote will not be successful. There won’t be enough support [from the pro-government parties in the Parliament] for it,” he explained. While backing the policies of the present government, he admitted that there were areas that still needed work. He added that the government was working to iron out such issues. “But I don’t believe that things have gone astray that warrants to take a no confidence motion against the President,” Gasim said. Gasim also countered the rumors that JP’s deputy leader and Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir was looking to quit from the party. On that note, Gasim revealed that no discussions of such nature had taken place. However, he did not refute the rumors. He added that such a decision should not be taken without a just cause. “I believe that everyone will do things for a reason. Whether it will be done or not is upto the individual,” Gasim stated. Rumors are rife that there are divergences of opinion in the leadership of Jumhoory Party. In that regard, Gasim stressed that difference of opinion within his party was not a cause for concern but did admit that disobeying the party’s general regulations and decision of the various bodies was an issue. He added that it would be difficult to work with such people.
