President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has called for international participation to safeguard the nation from climate change effects.
In the statement delivered to COP21 meeting in Paris, France, President Yameen said that addressing the effects of climate change was not the responsibility of one nation, but rather a global responsibility.
President Yameen added that every nation had a key role to play in mitigating climate change effects. He stressed that the meetings in Paris have to be ones that deliver measures that are more than capable of adequately addressing the situation.
President Yameen noted that if climate change issues are not addressed now, low lying nations such as the Maldives will face insurmountable losses.
He added that climate change was the biggest challenge to development, safety and security in the 21st century.
