Government to launch Hulhumale' yellowfin tuna processing facility next month

The government will begin construction of a yellowfin tuna processing facility in Hulhumale' next month, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam announced on Wednesday.
The announcement comes amid ongoing protests by fishermen at the Presidential Jetty, where boats have gathered to demand urgent government action.
In a post on X, Shiyam acknowledged that the biggest concern among yellowfin tuna fishermen is the delay in receiving payments for fish sold. He noted that while fisheries are improving, the market price of yellowfin tuna has fallen, adding that the government is working to expand the sector and deliver on its promises.
Shiyam said practical work on the Hulhumale' facility will begin next month as part of the government’s pledge to strengthen the industry.

“Since June last year, the Male' area has made arrangements to supply fuel at the base rate through STO under the special instructions of the President,” he said.
He added that by March next year, at least one island in each atoll will be provided with fuel at STO rates.
“There are happy days ahead for fishing families,” Shiyam wrote.
