Two Sri Lankan fishing vessels, which were illegally fishing within the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), have been brought under the custody of the MNDF Coast Guard and handed over to the police.
The two vessels were seized 51 nautical miles east of Haa Alifu Kela, within the Maldivian maritime territory.
This operation was conducted as part of a surveillance operation carried out jointly by the MNDF Coast Guard and the MNDF Air Corps, based on intelligence shared by regional countries. The Sri Lankan vessels were brought under the custody of the MNDF Coast Guard at approximately 08:30 AM on December 17th. Cases of illegal fishing are increasing in Maldivian waters.
