President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined his vision to liberate the nation from longstanding constraints and achieve comprehensive national independence across social, economic and developmental sectors through an unprecedented level of public participation and empowerment. He shared this vision while delivering his address at the official ceremony held this morning to commemorate the 61st Independence Day of the Maldives.
In his address, the President extended congratulations to recipients of national honours and individuals recognised for their long service to the State. He highlighted that the observance of Independence Day through the presentation of such honours reflects the values of dedication, professionalism, and public service that should inspire future generations.
President Dr Muizzu stated that the recipients of today’s honours have demonstrated integrity, honesty, loyalty, diligence, sincerity, patience, and commitment throughout their service. He observed that these values have always been central to safeguarding the nation’s independence, adding that Maldivians should strive to uphold these principles in their daily lives.
Emphasising the importance of drawing upon the experience of distinguished individuals in national decision-making, the President announced plans to establish a Presidential Advisory Council comprising recipients of national honours. He also revealed plans to establish a National Advisory Council consisting of experts and scholars to provide guidance on key national issues.
The President further highlighted measures being undertaken to empower young people and women. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to introducing the necessary legislative reforms to strengthen their representation and participation in the legislative process.
Highlighting the broader meaning of independence, the President stated that true national sovereignty encompasses social freedom, economic self-reliance, and sustainable development. In this regard, he outlined the progress achieved by the Administration and its long-term vision for strengthening the country’s social, economic, and developmental independence.
Addressing the housing sector, the President reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the country’s housing challenges. He stated that his Administration aims to become the first in the nation’s history to initiate, complete, and hand over housing projects within a single presidential term.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to removing barriers to economic and industrial self-reliance. In this regard, he announced that the Malé Commercial Port will be fully relocated to K. Thilafushi by 11 November 2027, under full Government ownership and management, to support the continued expansion of the national economy.
Concluding his address, the President outlined his vision for the country’s development by 26 July 2028, highlighting the Administration’s commitment to advancing national progress and strengthening the country’s long-term prosperity.
