Parliament has approved Mohamed Asif as a member of the Elections Commission (EC).
The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions on Wednesday interviewed the candidates for the EC listed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The list comprises:
Mohamed Asif (H. Iruvai)Shahula Ismail (Hinnavaru, Lhaviyani Atoll)Azleema Ahmed (Dhaftharu 341-91)Ahmed Mansoor (V. Rivethi)Mariyam Haneefa Haadhil (Kelaa, Haa Alif Atoll)
Ten out of the 11 committee members in attendance voted for Asif.
Asif is a brother-in-law of Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid. It is apparent that Minister Shahid’s relatives have been appointed to several state positions.
