Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that former President Nasheed gives false information to foreign media.
PPM Interim Vice President and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said that former President Nasheed has deceived Maldivian people, is giving false information to foreign media and is telling outright lies.
“The country’s President for the past three years is deceiving the Maldivian people and giving false information to foreign media. We condemn these actions,” Abdul Raheem said.
He said that the Maldivian people, Police and Military stood up against the President in defence of the country’s religion and Constitution, and that there this cannot be labelled a coup.
“He told foreign media sources that Maldivian people and military conducted a coup against him. This is an outright lie. They stood up against him in defence of the country’s religion and Constitution. That was no coup,” Abdul Raheem said.
He said that Nasheed’s allegations that he was held at gunpoint make no sense; Nasheed decided to resign on his own.
“His allegations that he was threatened to resign don’t make sense. In his speech he said that he feels that if he stays in power any longer, it would damage the country and its people. He said that he has decided to resign for this reason. It was his own choice,” Abdul Raheem said.
Abdul Raheem believes that President Dr Waheed’s government will uphold the law, and that PPM will accord its full support to the new government.
PPM Media Committee Member Dhunya Maumoon said that a meeting was held with UN Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco today. Information regarding the developments leading up to the change of government, including Nasheed’s illegal commands issued to the Police and Military, were shared with Mr Fernandez-Taranco.
