President Muizzu unveils “green belt” plan under Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu project

An ambitious greening initiative is set to transform the Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu development project, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
The newly redeveloped road, stretching from the local market to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal, will be lined with a dedicated green belt—large trees planted in big pots and in a separate ground‑level strip, spaced at regular intervals to create a continuous canopy, according to the President.
Speaking during a special programme, President Muizzu emphasised the government’s “special priority” on environmental stewardship, highlighting the nationwide drive to plant five million trees.
“Our vision is to embed nature into the very fabric of our infrastructure,” he said, underscoring that the greening of Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu is a pilot for similar initiatives across the archipelago.
The first phase of the project is being rolled out in five distinct segments. Segment One—running from the local market to Izzuddeen Jetty—has already been completed, while Segments 2, 3 and 4 are currently under construction. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has finished the sewerage works for these sections.
