Adhaalath Party Chief Sheikh Imran Abdullah’s legal counsel and Party Deputy Leader Ali Zahir has stated that he will file an appeal for the 12 year jail sentence issued on Imran.
Imran was sentenced for 12 years for his alleged role in the brawls that ensued in the May Day 2015 protests.
Speaking to Miadhu, Ali Zahir said that he intended to file the appeal in High Court, but had been delayed as Criminal Court had released related documentation only two days back.
Ali Zahir added that Imran’s sentence had not been accepted by many as a credible sentence, including both local and international bodies.
“What we can do is go through the legal channels and complete the set procedures to give him a fair trial,” he said.
While the Criminal Court had deemed that Sheikh Imran had to be responsible for all chaos and violence that had ensued in the May Day protest, the National Inquiry Commission had revealed that
deposed Vice President Ahmed Adeeb had planned to detonate an IED in the protest. Based on the incident reports, eyewitness statements which showed that the pickup drivers had changed course, mid protest, and a sudden entrance of a vehicle had led many to question the events of that night.
