Former HRCM Vice President Shifaq Mufeed, newly appointed state minister to Home Ministry
The government of the Maldives on Sunday appointed former member of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Shifag Mufeed, as the state minister at Ministry of Home Affairs.
Shifag resigned from his post as Vice President of HRCM last Thursday. He did not state a reason for his resignation but had notably expressed dissatisfaction with the commission’s work earlier.
The former lawmaker of Fuvahmulah Central constituency, Shifaq was appointed to HRCM on August 2015. He was subsequently approved by the parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions as HRCM’s Vice President in October that year.
Shifaq had stepped into the political field as a member of main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He later joined ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and then Jumhoory Party before returning to PPM after President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom came to power in 2013.
