Ministry to set up Ramadan farmers’ market in Male’ to ensure affordable produce

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that a temporary market will be established in Male’ City during the month of Ramadan to allow farmers to sell their produce at affordable prices.
The ministry said on Wednesday that preparations are underway in collaboration with relevant agencies. Each year, large volumes of agricultural produce are brought to the capital during Ramadan, and the temporary market aims to make it easier for farmers to transport and sell their goods directly in Male’.
Island councils interested in participating have been asked to submit application forms to the ministry. Councils must include estimates of the main agricultural products exported from their islands during last year’s Ramadan, along with the number of farmers who wish to sell at this year’s market. Applications will remain open until next Thursday.
The ministry noted that the market is intended to support farmers and ensure stable prices for consumers during the peak-demand period.

Two of the country’s most productive agricultural islands; Th. Kandoodhoo and AA. Thoddoo, have reported that their fields are in better condition this year compared to last Ramadan.
Thoddoo councillor and farmer Aishath Junaida said most fields are healthy, though some watermelon plots continue to face disease and pest issues. She added that high pesticide costs remain a challenge, but farmers expect improved income during Ramadan, including from crops such as cucumbers.
Kandoodhoo Council President Ahmed Reehan said farmers on the island are preparing for the season and expect to export around two tonnes of pepper per day during Ramadan.
