EC advises MDP to file bribery case against JP candidate Nazim

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed that the Elections Commission (EC) has advised the party to file a bribery case against Jumhooree Party (JP)'s Dhangethi candidate and former defence minister Mohamed Nazim.
In a press release, MDP stated that the “Nazim-Affaaf Foundation” has promised to offer tangible benefits to Dhangethi constituents.
MDP cited a Dhangethi council member saying on Nazim's campaign Viber group that Nazim’s foundation had covered all expenses to build a monument near the Dhangethi harbor.
MDP has filed the case at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and has urged the EC to investigate the case.
According to a recent amendment to the Elections Act, anything a candidate gives out for one’s own benefit will be deemed as bribery.
According to the Elections Act, it is an offense to provide or offer anything to voters as a benefit to the candidate to sway the voters in their favor.
Speaking to the media regarding the accusations, former Defense Minister, Colonel (Retired) Nazim stated that his foundation has not done anything illegal.
