Former home minister Umar Naseer has said that he will resist former president Mohamed Nasheed’s attempt to change the Maldives government to a parliamentary system.
Speaking to the media, the former minister said that despite Nasheed’s attempt to ‘wreck’ the Maldives government, the people want a system where their voices are heard.
Umar said that a parliamentary system is ‘unsellable’ in Maldives and that citizens have refused to implement the system before.
Umar also said that the biggest obstruction to president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government is Nasheed and that his return to Maldives is a sign that the political situation in the country will only get worse.
After his return, Nasheed told the media that he has always believed that a parliamentary system is the most beneficial to Maldivians.
