MDP announces protests until Supreme Court decides election case

Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) national council has decided to hold protests until the Supreme Court makes a decision on Jumhoory Party’s case, asking the court the annul the results of the first round of the presidential elections.
Supreme Court has issued an injunction ordering to indefinitely postpone the second round of the presidential election, scheduled for Saturday, 28 September, until the court rules on the case.
MDP’s national council made the decision in a meeting on Monday night, held in response to the Supreme Court injunction. The resolution to hold protests was proposed by Hulhu-Meedhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb and passed by a unanimous vote of the council.
Speaking at the national council meeting, MDP’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed called upon the authorities to hold the second round of the elections on Saturday as scheduled. He also asked the military protect the members of his party.
All members who addressed the national council had harshly criticized the Supreme Court bench.
MDP started protests in Male’ soon after the national council passed the resolution.
