President: Maldives encouraged by China

President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that it is a source of major encouragement and inspiration for the Maldives, that China is willing to support its national efforts to transform its economy. At a joint press briefing by President Yameen and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is currently in the Maldives on a state visit, President Yameen said that this encouragement is especially important for the Maldives, which is at a crucial juncture in terms of development following its recent graduation from the list of least developed countries (LDCs).
President Yameen said that fruitful discussions were held this morning between officials of the two countries, during which they explored avenues for future cooperation to take the bilateral relationship to new levels.
“I wish to express my sincere appreciation to President Xi for expressing China’s willingness to enhance the provision of developmental assistance to the Maldives, especially towards mega developmental projects inked in my presidential manifesto, such as the Male’-Hulhumale’ bridge,” said President Yameen.
A total of nine agreements were signed between the governments of Maldives and China today.
