Met Office forecasts heavy rain nationwide; Southern atolls to see two days of downpours

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a forecast of widespread rainfall across the country, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in southern atolls over the next two days.
According to the Met Office, the current spell of rain is linked to changing weather conditions. A White Alert has been issued for areas between Vaavu Atoll and Raa Atoll, warning of heavy showers, thunderstorms, and winds reaching up to 40 mph in storm clouds.
Rainfall in the northern atolls is expected to ease by Tuesday, but the bureau forecasts another round of heavy rain beginning Friday.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed that Thinadhoo City was the only location to report flooding so far. Torrential rain from late Saturday into Sunday morning inundated homes, the hospital, and the island’s water plant, though services continued without interruption. NDMA and the Thinadhoo Council are currently assessing damages.
The Maldives continues to experience persistent rainfall, while neighboring Sri Lanka was struck by a cyclone last week that triggered landslides and floods, killing more than 600 people. Heavy rains have again been forecast for Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the storm.
