Addu City, the country’s second most populous urban centre, was without water for eight hours on Monday.
Water supply was cut at around 14:00 hrs and was restored shortly after 22:00 hrs.
Addu Deputy Mayor Mohamed Shuaau told Sun that the interruption affected water supply to toilets and other essential uses.
Feydhoo Councilor Mohamed Faisal said the outage was caused by a leak in the main pipeline.
“It was resolved in the evening at first. But even after it was resolved, the pipeline broke again after a while, and [water supply] was delayed once more,” Faisal said.
Faisal noted that Maradhoo, Maradhoo‑Feydhoo and Hithadhoo continue to face recurring water issues, adding that the problem has remained unresolved for many years.
In addition to water shortages, Addu residents also face frequent power outages across the interconnected islands of the city, a long‑standing concern that has intensified in recent days.
Residents have been voicing complaints for several days over the repeated disruptions.
During a visit to Addu in early November last year, the President met with the community and announced a major project to establish 30 MW of electricity capacity in the city to address the chronic power issue.
The President said technical and administrative work is now underway to improve the quality of generators and power plants in Addu.
