Government assists nearly 1,900 tourists stranded by Middle East flight disruptions

Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim said government has provided support to 1,888 tourists who were unable travel following flight disruptions due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Speaking about the situation, the minister said arrangements had been made for tourists who were forced to wait at the airport due to cancelled or delayed flights. He also noted that the government received support from tourism industry stakeholders during the emergency response.
According to the minister, several resorts allowed stranded tourists to extend their stays without significant price increases.
Minister Thoriq added that many bookings scheduled for March and April had been cancelled because of the disruptions. In response, a number of resorts have allowed guests to rebook without substantial additional charges.
“So far, we have provided assistance to 1,888 tourists who faced difficulties obtaining the help they needed at the airport. We have also put in place a plan to further strengthen this support,” he said.
The minister said the government will also step up tourism marketing activities from early next month to offset the impact of the disruptions.
Key markets including China, India and Russia will be prioritised as part of the strategy.
“Since China, India and Russia are the markets we need to focus on most, work is being done to increase flight frequencies and allow additional flights from these locations,” Minister Thoriq said.
He added that discussions are under way with neighbouring countries, tourism destinations and airline operators to improve connectivity. The minister noted that Turkish Airlines is currently among the most active airlines operating to the Maldives, and talks are being held with the Turkey government to strengthen its operations.
Minister Thoriq also said Maldivian embassies in several countries are working to enhance marketing efforts in their respective markets. Meanwhile, the minister has advised those working in the tourism industry to pay close attention to the latest guidelines issued by the tourism ministry.
