MDP protesters call to withdraw charges against Nasheed

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protesters have called to withdraw charges against former president and MDP presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed, accusing the courts of being unjust regarding Nasheed’s court case. They voiced their sentiments while seated on the intersection between Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu last night.
The MDP protest last night, held under the banner “For the protection of president Nasheed” started as a march from the Tsunami Monument and later gathered to the Chaandhanee Magu intersection.
The protesters aired sentiments saying that president Nasheed will not be protected by the current government and that the trial for his charges will not be fair. They also said that the politically motivated purpose of taking up charges against Nasheed is to bar him from the upcoming presidential elections.
After staying in the Chaandhanee Magu intersection, the protesters moved to Sosun Magu near former Naadhee building.
A police barricade near Majeediyya School was set to fire later last night after the crowd had thinned down. There were no confrontations between the police and the protesters last night.
MDP has called for the charges against Nasheed, for the illegal arrest of the Criminal Court judge be withdrawn, while the Prosecutor General’s Office has said that they have no intention of withdrawing the case.
