When quality of Maldivian universities improve, they can be profitable institutions: Finance Minister

Finance Minister Ahmed Munavvar have said that when the quality of Maldivian universities improve, they can be run as financially profitable institutions.
Speaking at a ceremony held tonight at Islamic University of Maldives to award 10 PhD scholarships, the minister said that if the local universities improve in quality, foreign students will visit Maldives for studies. He said that, as a result the universities can make profit and can run as profitable institutions like many foreign universities.
He said that the first step is to improve the quality of education like foreign universities. He also said that it is important to use modern technology and fulfil the requirements of the students.
Speaking about the scholarships he said that the recipients should understand that they get selected for the scholarships out of many students and should always keep in mind to serve the country once they are back.
“ Maldivian students are good at studies. So foreign countries will have interesting offers. If you accept these offers, then it will be a big loss for the country” said the Minister. He said that there are many students in Maldives who would like to go for high education, but the country is not financially capable to send everyone abroad.
He requested the scholarship recipients to make the best use of the opportunity and then serve the country.
He further said that, it is important to develop the universities to provide more high educational opportunities in the country. He noted that the work done by Islamic University is exemplary in this regard. The minister praised the university for their numerous achievements in a short period of time.
