China to recall the Shaanxi Province milk powder products

According to Chinese state media، the country’s food safety watchdog has called for three milk powder producers in Shaanxi province to recall their infant baby formula powder.
Exceeding levels of nitrates were detected in some of the powdered milk samples while the products were branded as sub-standard according to Chinese Xinhua news agency.
In the meantime، the local watchdog had urged Shaanxi to punish its milk producers who had broken the manufacturing regulations and laws.
The  quality of milk products in China remain a sensitive subject following the deadly tainted milk scandal back in 2008. With a total of six children dead from consuming the milk products، and additional 300،000 babies falling sick after drinking the milk which had been contaminated with high levels of melamine.
Shortly after the tainted milk scandal، imported milk products were highly priced in China.
Back in 2013، China’s mainland imposed a temporary ban on all imports milk powder from New Zealand، after its main dairy exporter، Fonterra، found a bacterial strain that can cause botulism in some of its products.
However، China continues to rely heavily on New Zealand for its dairy products imports.
