The Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has assured the public that the government is vigilantly tracking fluctuations in the prices of essential commodities to prevent shortages and economic disruption.
Speaking at the weekly press conference, Minister Saeed emphasised the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the availability of critical goods for Maldivian citizens.
The Minister revealed that a total of 164 key commodities, including cooking gas, fuel, rice, sugar, and flour, are under daily surveillance to ensure uninterrupted supply.
"We are closely monitoring these items, along with 26 others, to mitigate any potential disruptions. Our goal is to guarantee that every essential product remains accessible to the people," he said.
Highlighting the government’s proactive approach, Minister Saeed noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had prioritised assessing the economic impact of global conflicts from the outset. This foresight led to successful negotiations with foreign suppliers, securing stable fuel and food imports for the Maldives.
Additionally, Minister Saeed shared that he recently convened with key national agencies to strategise long-term measures to insulate the Maldivian market from global shocks, insisting that the objective is to minimise the adverse effects of international market volatility on the economy.
