The Government of the Maldives has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as the “storming” of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by Israeli officials, calling the move a serious breach of international law and a provocation with far-reaching consequences.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldives government accused Israel of undermining the sanctity and historical status of one of Islam’s holiest sites. The government said such actions threaten the longstanding arrangements governing the compound and risk escalating tensions in an already volatile region.
The statement further criticised what it characterised as repeated violations, including restrictions on access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, arguing that these measures infringe upon the fundamental rights of Palestinians. It added that the developments represent not only an attack on those rights but also an affront to Muslims worldwide.
Reiterating its longstanding position, the Maldives called on the international community to take “immediate and decisive measures” to hold Israel accountable. It urged global actors to respond to what it described as ongoing human rights violations and a disregard for established norms surrounding the site.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, located in East Jerusalem, holds deep religious and political significance and has long been a focal point of tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
