Construction has begun on a new mosque with a capacity of 500 worshippers and a branch of the National Centre for the Holy Quran in Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.
A special groundbreaking ceremony was held on the island to mark the start of the project. The ceremony was inaugurated by former Prosecutor General Muhuthaz Muhsin and attended by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, members of the Maamendhoo Council and a large number of residents.
The new mosque will be equipped with a solar power system and air conditioning, aimed at ensuring both sustainability and comfort for worshippers. It will also include a dedicated classroom and a library, which will serve as the operational base for Quranic educational programmes.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in collaboration with the National Centre for the Holy Quran, is working to establish Quran teaching branches across the Maldives, particularly in the atolls, to strengthen engagement with the Holy Quran.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the initiative, announcing plans to establish a Quran centre branch on every inhabited island.
The project reflects the government’s broader efforts to promote Islamic values and support religious education for future generations.
