The elderly community centre established by the government aims to increase the participation of elderly people in society and provide opportunities for senior citizens to participate in various activities.
Established in Male’, the centre organises many such events, such as the food and beverage exhibition and other daily activities for senior citizens.
This Ramadan, activities have been focused on strengthening community bonds, with a special iftar prepared for this purpose. Many senior citizens were in attendance.
Speaking to PSM News about the activities being held at the elderly community centre, a participant in these activities, Raziyya Mohamed stated that it is a very joyful environment, with the centre working together with senior citizens.
“I’m actually very happy to participate in activities held by the centre. I make a lot of friends. I think that it is better than staying at home all the time. That there is an opportunity somewhere. That’s why I’m very happy with the centre.” Raziyya said.
Activities held by this community centre include awareness programmes for senior citizens, religious activities, and different types of sports. Important days are celebrated, and other meetups are also held.
These are important works done to promote the mental and physical health of elderly people. The Ministry of Social and Family Development stated that a large number of senior citizens participate in these activities, even outside of Ramadan.
