MIRA recovers USD 35 million in outstanding dues in single month

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has demonstrated a significant enforcement success by recovering around USD 35.2 million in outstanding taxes and non-tax payments during a single month.
According to official figures released by the tax authority, the recovery efforts utilised multiple collection strategies, each yielding notable results. Notices sent to offending taxpayers proved the most effective method, generating roughly USD 24.1 million. Meanwhile, dues clearance programmes contributed USD 6.2 million, while installment agreements with taxpayers struggling to pay their full liabilities immediately yielded around USD 4.2 million. Additional efforts through reminder phone calls recovered USD 324,000, while action policy measures generated roughly USD 259,000.
The announcement comes as the government continues to address revenue collection challenges, with tax and non-tax payments forming a critical component of state funding. MIRA has emphasised that it has strengthened its enforcement measures and improved its recovery efforts over recent months, signaling a more aggressive approach to ensuring compliance from individuals and businesses alike.
In a related development, MIRA took the unprecedented step last month of publicly releasing the names of 48 individuals who have failed to file their income tax and personal income tax returns. The disclosure was made under the authority's established policy of naming taxpayers who remain non-compliant, particularly those who have missed the December 2024 filing deadline. The list includes both individual taxpayers as well as companies and other business entities, underscoring MIRA's commitment to transparency and accountability in tax administration.
