Tourist arrivals fall to 152,000 in April amid flight disruptions

More than 152,000 tourists visited the Maldives in April, bringing total arrivals for the year to over 800,000, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.
Official data shows that 152,861 visitors travelled to the country during the month. This represents a 24.4 per cent decrease compared to the 202,214 arrivals recorded in April 2025.
Cumulatively, tourist arrivals for the year have reached 813,503, reflecting a 5.1 per cent decline compared to the 857,386 visitors recorded during the same period last year.
The drop in arrivals has been attributed to temporary flight cancellations linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. However, authorities note that several airlines have since resumed operations to the Maldives, contributing to a gradual recovery in visitor numbers. The current daily average stands at 6,668 tourists.
The top five source markets for tourist arrivals this year are China with 122,134 visitors, followed by Russia with 104,174. The United Kingdom ranks third with 72,453 arrivals, while Italy and Germany account for 65,583 and 53,564 visitors respectively.
Of the total arrivals recorded so far this year, 799,695 tourists entered the Maldives by air.
The number of registered tourist facilities has also increased, rising from 67,470 at the start of the year to 68,005 at present. These facilities primarily include resorts and marina establishments.
Despite the recent decline, the Maldives has continued to make progress in developing its tourism sector. The government has said efforts are ongoing to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict, while industry experts remain optimistic that further improvements will be achieved in the country’s tourism industry.
