President announces measures to grant ease on monitoring mechanisms for prolonged pre-trial detention

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, following consultations with relevant authorities regarding prolonged pre-trial detentions, restrictions on remand will be addressed through guidelines issued by the Courts, incorporating electronic monitoring mechanisms.
The announcement was made on the President’s official X account, where he stated that the measure would help alleviate many of the associated issues. He further noted that individuals who meet the eligibility criteria would have their remand periods reviewed accordingly.
The President met relevant authorities to address the concerns raised by advocates for elimination of prolonged detention on May 8, 2025. In-depth discussions were held to develop an electronic monitoring system aimed at providing a second chance to individuals in extended pre-trial detention through supervised release mechanisms.
