Price of chili drops as prices of orange and apple soar

The price of chili in Male’ market has dropped while prices of orange and apple have soared beyond affordable rates. 
The prices of fruits and vegetables in the market is currently higher than usual. In this regard, green apples, which was previously priced at MVR 5 per each, is currently priced at MVR 12 each. Meanwhile, a red apple is priced at MVR 10 each. The prices of apples have been on the rise for a while now.
Meanwhile, an orange previously available for MVR 3 or MVR 4 each, is currently priced at MVR 12 each.

A cucumber kilo which was previously priced at MVR 45 per kilo is now priced at MVR 70 per kilo.
A papaya kilo is currently priced at MVR 55 per kilo, up from MVR 45 per kilo previously.
The price of lime, a staple in Maldivian cuisine, has also gone up. In this regard, a kilo of lime was previously priced at MVR 30, which as now gone up to MVR 40 per kilo.
Bittergourd is presently priced at MVR 70 per kilo. While the prices of majority of fruits and vegetables have gone up, the price of chili has gone down.
In this regard, locally produced chili is priced between MVR 80 and MVR 100 million.

The prices of commodities began to rise since the end of last month. Back then, seller attributed to delays in receiving goods due to obstructions posed by bad weather.
The increase in commodity prices is also linked to the rise in the value of the US dollar, which now exceeds MVR 20 on the black market. Due to limited availability through official channels, many business owners are compelled to buy USD from the black market to finance their imports.
