100K sqft Addu land deal sparks parliamentary probe

Independent MP Abdul Rahman, representing the Addu Meedhoo Constituency, has formally requested a parliamentary committee investigation into the alleged unjust allocation of over 100,000 square feet of land within the Addu City Meedhoo Tourism Zone.
The MP claims the allocation to a single entity violated the rights of numerous individuals.
In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah on Sunday, MP Rahman detailed concerns raised by various tourism sector stakeholders in Addu. These concerns center on the reported illegal allocation of a significant portion of land in the Meedhoo tourism zone to a private company without a public bidding process.
According to the letter, the substantial parcel of land was purportedly illegally allocated to Sunville Pvt. The company, known for undertaking various government projects including the construction of government buildings and power plants, allegedly received three plots of land within the Meedhoo Tourism Zone, identified as B1, C5, and C4, each measuring 17,500 square feet.
MP Rahman further stated that an additional 47,083 square feet of land was granted to Sunville Pvt., increasing their total allocated land to 64,583 square feet. When factoring in the adjacent beach area, the total land given to the company reportedly reaches 100,000 square feet, he explained to Sun.

The MP emphasized that this allocation was carried out without consultation with the public or other stakeholders, and crucially, without a competitive bidding process.
The letter to the Parliament Speaker indicates that the council's Tourism Committee approved the transfer of the land to the company during its 46th meeting on February 27. It also notes that plots B1, C5, and C4 were initially allocated to Fehimoo Pvt Ltd in 2021, but that agreement was terminated on May 2 of the previous year due to the company's non-compliance.
Citing the city council, MP Rahman stated that this rushed land allotment made to Sunville Pvt. encompasses existing roads, electricity distribution boxes, and utility lines. He also alleged that the allocation encroached upon land previously received by another individual in the area.
MP Rahman disclosed that he has been receiving similar complaints regarding other tourism zones in Addu concerning illegal land leases, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming local council elections.
He urged the Speaker to refer this matter to the relevant parliamentary committee for an urgent investigation.
