Majlis Committee Approves Extension of Niumath Shafeeg’s Term as Children’s Ombudsperson

The Human Rights and Gender Committee of the People’s Majlis has unanimously approved the extension of Children’s Ombudsperson Niumath Shafeeg’s term.
During an interview held today, Niumath secured over 75 percent of the marks awarded by committee members, leading to the decision to recommend her for a second term.
Niumath was first appointed to the role on July 23, 2020, following parliamentary approval. Her current five-year term is set to expire on July 23 of this year.
The Children’s Ombudsperson is tasked with monitoring state institutions for compliance with the Child Rights Protection Act and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The role also involves evaluating institutions and staff engaged in child protection and investigating their actions where necessary.
The position carries a monthly salary of MVR 25,000 and an additional allowance of MVR 10,000, bringing the total compensation to MVR 35,000.
