National bank, Bank of Maldives has revealed their decision to provide free sanitary products to all the female staff employed at the bank.
Noting that sanitary products are essential for women, BML said that providing free sanitary products for their female staff was put into effect from Thursday onward.
Free sanitary products will be provided for female staff at all of its branches and departments, the bank further revealed.
In late November, Parliament passed the bill seeking to repeal the tax on sanitary pads and tampons, submitted by Kurendhoo constituency MP Abdul Baaree Abdulla.
In early December, President Solih ratified the fifth amendment to the Goods and Services Tax Act (10/2011) that repeals tax on feminine sanitary products. With this ratification, the tax on feminine sanitary products such as pads and tampons was repealed and these goods will now be under essential goods that are zero-rated.
While there was a six percent GST on sanitary products during the past administrations, slashing Goods and Service Tax (GST) on sanitary products was one of the pledges made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during his presidential campaign, to be completed within the first week in office and it was also included in the ruling coalition’s manifesto, which vowed to cut GST on such essential products.
